On November 10th at 7pm in MoMA’s Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 1 (11 West 53rd St), there will be an opening screening of a new historical epic from Taiwan, Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale. Earlier in the day, the Press Division, TECO-NY will host a press conference and reception from 12-1:30pm in the lobby of the TECO-NY building (1 East 42nd St.). The film’s world renowned director, Wei Te-sheng, will be present at both events.

Seediq Bale was shown in competition at the 68th Venice International Film Festival and it was selected as a contender for nomination for the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film in 2011.At the film’s Taipei premiere, internationally acclaimed director and producer John Wu said the film was the most touching story he had ever seen, one that helped him learn about the indomitable spirit of human beings. He lauded Wei for his willpower and humanitarianism in undertaking this epic project.

On Tuesday, November 8th from 6:30- 8pm, the Press Division of TECO-NY and New York University’s Asia Pacific American Institute will be co-hosting the U.S. Premier screening of Megastructures: EcoARK, a documentary co-produced by National Geographic and the Government Information Office in Taipei, at the Cantor Film Center (36 E 8th ST, Theater 101). Following the screening, Arthur Huang, the EcoARK’s primary architect who is being flown in from Taipei for this event, and NYU Sociology and Metropolitan Studies Professor, Harvey Molotch will have a conversation about issues raised in the film, including urban planning and ecological sustainability. The discussion will be moderated by Cameron Tonkinwise who is the Associate Dean for Sustainability at Parsons The New School for Design.

The EcoARK is a unique architectural project that was built for the 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo and which was one of the 12 finalists for the Wall Street Journal’s 2011 Asia Innovation Awards. It is an innovative structure that creatively raises awareness of environmentalism and sustainable urban architecture. Made of 1.5 million recycled PET bottles, this mega-structure is translucent but durable, built to withstand earthquakes and typhoons. The PET bottles have been reconstituted into polli-bricks which have an interlocking design which allows the building to be constructed without the use of chemical adhesives. The film documents the challenges faced by the design and building teams to make this building a reality.

Noted Taiwanese conceptual artist Lee Mingwei is famous for his art piece focus on the philosophic thinking during the process of interaction with strangers. This kind of interaction with other is not only communication during daily life but also the mutual understanding between various ethnic groups.

Lee mingwei was born in Taiwan, and currently now based in New York City. He mentioned: "For my practice, art is about exchange and interaction with strangers and gift-giving." According to this principal, he created consecutive projects, like "The Dining Project", "The Letter- Writing Project", "The Sleeping Project".

The Moving Garden comprises a forty-five-foot-long granite table with one hundred freshly cut flowers that appear to grow out of a channel running down its middle. Created by New York–based artist Lee Mingwei, the interactive installation also includes single blossoms arranged around the channel, which visitors are invited to take when they leave the Museum, on the condition that they make a detour on the way to their next destination and give the flower to a stranger as a gift. As the day wears on, the flowers on the table disappear, one by one. The next day, they are replaced, and the cycle begins again.

Lee’s piece was inspired by his reading of Lewis Hyde’s The Gift: Imagination and the Erotic Life of Property, which explores the beneficial effects of gifts on both those who give them and those who receive. Another inspiration came on a spring day, when the artist was sitting along the banks of the Rhône River in Lyon and saw hundreds of flowers inexplicably floating downstream. This 2009 piece is one of many participatory works of art that Lee has been creating since the late 1990s.

Lee Mingwei: "The Moving Garden" was organized by Eugenie Tsai, John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum, in close cooperation with the artist.

為慶祝中華民國建國一百年，並推廣台灣卓越之當代藝術創作，本中心與紐約布魯克林美術館合辦台灣藝術家李明維個展「移動花園(Moving Garden)」，將此一多次獲邀參加國際性知名藝術雙年展的台灣藝術家之作品呈現給紐約藝術愛好者。

本次展出的作品為一互動裝置藝術作品，為一長達45英呎長的黑色花崗石桌，桌面切開成峽谷式切口，切口下即為一裝水之容器，插滿鮮花，順沿著切口兩側滿佈鮮花。今年10月5日至明(2011)年1月22日間將擺放於布魯克林美術館入口大廳中，當觀眾離開美術館時，可以摘一朵花，繞道而行，在前往下一目的地時，將花朵送給所遇見的任何有緣人，以體會「施」、「受」之心境。隨著時間的流逝，花朵漸少，次日又有新生的花朵呈現，週而復始，象徵生命的生生不息。

藝術家李明維表示，此一作品的靈感起源自美國文學家路易斯•海德(Lewis Hyde)之著作『禮物』一書中所提及「創造力與藝術家的現代世界」(The Gift:Creativity and the Artist in Modern World)，禮物所能引發的互惠效果，無論是對於授者或是受者，產生的心情上的效果，是藝術家想要探討的。另一面，藝術家有一次在春季徜徉在法國里昂羅內(Rhone)河堤旁，無意間看見數以百計的花朵順河而下的美景，引發此一創作之初衷。

台灣藝術家李明維為國際知名藝術家，其作品細膩感性，透過藝術參與及互動，探討人我之間信任與客我之間關係，他1990年代即漸漸嶄露頭角。在尚在耶魯大學攻讀碩士學位之際，就發表「晚餐計畫」(The Dining Project)。該計畫邀請社區人士直接到工作室與他一對一共同用餐。最近之作品包括2008年的「如沙的卡爾尼卡」(Guernica in Sand)、2009年的「補裳計畫」(The Mending Project)、2010年「聲音的三部曲」(Trilogy of Sounds)等作品。

Taiwan, the Republic of China, is a land known for both its natural and cultural diversity, ranging from vast mountains and forests to bustling cities and traditional arts. The works of four Taiwanese photographers show why their home cannot truly be represented by words alone. Liu Chen-hsiang’s ’Creative Space. Cloud Gate Dance Theatre – White’ will be among the pieces featured in ‘Taiwan Sublime: Four Photography Masters’ Visions of the Treasure Island.’ The four photography series displaying the life and landscapes of Taiwan will be on display in The Hope Horn Gallery from Sept. 12 to Oct. 7. The University of Scranton’s Hope Horn Gallery will present “Taiwan Sublime: Four Photography Masters’ Visions of the Treasure Island” from Sept. 12 to Oct. 7. Dr. Darlene Miller-Lanning, Ph.D., director of The Hope Horn Gallery, said the exhibit will consist of four different series that each displays a distinct aspect of Taiwan. “All of the photographers featured give a different view of Taiwan,” Dr. Miller-Lanning said. “When the series are shown together, you get a complete view of the life and landscapes of Taiwan.” Chi Po-lin’s “In Soaring – An Elevated Vision of Natural Taiwan” gives an aerial view of Taiwan’s landscape, including its mountains, coastlines, and waterways. Liu Chen-hsiang’s “In Passion – Heavenly Feast of the Performing Arts” displays dramatic shots of Taiwan’s modern and traditional forms of dance and other performing arts. Huang Ting-sheng’s “In Folkways – Melding the Mundane and the Celestial” reveals everyday life in Taiwan.Chen Chih-hsiung’s “In Interfaces – Rhythms of Nature and Humanity” shows the contemporary, built landscapes and buildings of Taiwan.

Jeremy Hu, co-founder and curator of the Works Gallery in New York, N.Y., will give a lecture on “Taiwan Sublime” at Brennan Hall on Oct. 7, from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by a public reception at The Hope Horn Gallery, from 6 to 8 p.m., as part of downtown Scranton’s First Friday. In addition, The Hope Horn Gallery is offering ink wash workshops based on “Taiwan Sublime: Four Photography Masters’ Visions of the Treasure Island.” Participants will use brush and ink techniques to create simple landscape drawings. School and community groups may call to schedule times.

In addition to the exhibit, the University will host an Interdependence Day and Asian Moon Festival Performance by the internationally acclaimed Chai Found Music Workshop Ensemble on Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. The performance, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place in the Houlihan-McLean Center. The ensemble will also conduct an educational workshop for area elementary and high school students on Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. The workshop is free of charge, however reservations are required to attend and can be made by calling 570.941.4094.The Hope Horn Gallery, located on the fourth floor of Hyland Hall, is open Sunday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

Cyril Christo and Marie Wilkinson’s Lysander’s Song: Documenting Kenya’s Disappearing Elephants

It was husband-and-wife photo-documentarians Cyril Christo and Marie Wilkinson who brought the decimation of elephants in Africa to the attention of editors at Vanity Fair, resulting in the tremendous August 2011 story by Alex Shoumatoff. Cyril and Marie have been capturing scenes from the vanishing natural world since 1996, producing two books—Lost Africa (2004), on the tribes of East Africa, and Walking Thunder (2009), about the elephants of Africa—and now, a movie, Lysander's Song. This short documentary features interviews with native tribespeople primarily in northern Kenya on topics such as climate change, globalization, and life with the disappearing elephants. The film will be screened next Tuesday, September 27, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Cyril, son of the artist duo Christo and the late Jeanne-Claude, was nominated for an Academy Award for his 1987 documentary, A Stitch for Time. He and Marie have been moved by the rampant poaching of elephants. “The inspiration was our son, Lysander, his love for elephants and the wild,” says Cyril. “Without the elephants,” he continues, “we will self-cannibalize. We cannot afford to tell the children of the future, ‘This is where the wild things were.’

Taiwan Crafts in New York

Twenty-first century’s digital age and globalization tendency creates an illusory atmosphere which makes cultural identity and the sense of belonging of cultural industries especially important. Traditional crafts have local history, cultural background and nature as its base and continue to attract other external forces. After the impact of the Industrial Revolution and the baptism of the twentieth century aesthetics, the craftsmanship has developed a crosscutting nature with a mix of design, fashion, nature and art. Materials in process under craftsman’s hands correspond to the attitude of contemporary craftsmanship and the expression of emotions towards craftsman’s homeland and their own culture.

Based on the aim of cultural exchange and to promote Taiwan's craftsmanship internationally, the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Center, Taipei Cultural Center in New York and the Design Museum of Art (MAD) has co-operated an exchange program. Artists are arranged to work in the Open Studios on the sixth floor of MAD from 13th to 18th of September in order to interact with the public about their creation and to promote Taiwan’s culture

There are three participants in this program:

1. Chen, Shao- Yi 陳芍伊

How does a younger generation craftsman with Eastern cultural background facing Western impact recreates his/ her personal and cultural way of being? With a rich artistic experience in the United States (2010 Residency artist of South Carolina University, South Carolina USA/2009 Full Scholarship of Haystack Craft School, Maine USA), young pottery sculptor, Chen Shao Yi, combines ceramics with the performance forms of animations. Focus on the event as a starting point, through the concept of theater and animation, presenting the sense of movement through stillness and the sense of stillness through movement. Moreover, the human emotions revealed in are often ambiguous and often contains a certain tinge of irony.

Ceramics has a strong sculpting and three-dimensional character. Changes and modifications can be made when the clay is in its drying state. Such variability, with the use of video equipment to capture images of actions, allows a story to be narrated dynamically. The viewer may simply read the paintings on the ceramics to understand the artwork, but may also understand the work in another language via different visual vocabulary. At the same time, the video works can either be kept in the museum or can be transported to other regions. Hence, it is a combination of technology, craft and design.

2. Fan, Yang- Wu 范揚武

What kind of furniture combines the toughness of earth, gentleness of water, the sound of wind, the incessant chatter of time and the hard-work of men? What kind of furniture does not just explores the principle between existence and inexistence, between movement and stillness, also displays the concept of day and night, embraces the limits and the infinites, communicates between death and rebirth, narrates proceed and return, also combines manmade and nature? SMANGUS workshop’s craftsman Fan, Yang- Wu brings a strong emotion towards his hometown across the ocean to present the unique aesthetic and spiritual realm of handmade timber furniture.

Fan said, "The scenery is actually hiding in each block of wood, what I have to do is only to release it. I often start my work by finding inspirations from the material itself. Every piece of timber has its own life traces sometimes those trace reminds me of mountains, rivers and sometimes elegant rocks. Maybe there is a Cartier-Bresson's ‘The Decisive Moment’, once the brain is set, a large and a small chain saw plays, what is in the brain will be performed thoroughly.” Fan creation is somewhat like the top martial arts; with no certain factions nor certain moves, but with deep inner aesthetic strengths. Each piece of timber furniture seems to reveal one after another under his dancing hands.

3 Su, Su- Jen 蘇素任

As people around the world began to care about the earth, the Arctic ozone layer is getting thinner. Over-exploitation of forests leads to reduced oxygen globally. Scientists and environmentalists have found that bamboo can replace timber as it is a recyclable resource, it can also balance oxygen and carbon dioxide in the natural environment. It is one of the most useful plants on earth.

However, what is bamboo for people in Taiwan? Bamboo has been used in everyday life as a lifestyle and culture. It can be a symbol of high tolerance and can also be a memory of childhood where bamboo baskets and cages were used by our grandparents. From architectural structures, surface materials, furnitures, cabinets to food dish, chopsticks, etc; and to the art of weaving and carving, a life filled with bamboo seems to have a little leisure and elegancy.

Su has a rich traditional bamboo craft experience for seventeen years, specializing in bamboo weaving. She has been co-operating with designers to develop various forms of furniture in recent years. In 2008, she has gained the “The Most Touching Piece” in Maison & Objet France fall …and in 2009, has gained Germany's Reddot design Award. The activities this time in MAD will be completing a lampshade with different techniques and to guide the publics to experience bamboo weaving.

a wonderful abundance of natural and ethno-cultural diversity. This exhibition features four series of photographs taken by Taiwanese photographers who for many years have crisscrossed Taiwan and its smaller sister islands with the aim of creating a record of its natural and human wonders: Chi Po-lin’s (齊柏林) “In Soaring – An Elevated Vision of Natural Taiwan,” portrays the grandeur of Taiwan’s mountains, coastlines and waterways from a bird’s-eye perspective; Liu Chen-hsiang’s (劉振祥) “In Passion – Heavenly Feast of the Performing Arts,” gives a taste of the diversity and vitality of Taiwan’s modern dance and traditional drama; Huang Ting-sheng’s (黃丁盛) “In Folkways – Melding the Mundane and the Celestial,” presents scenes from everyday life in the spiritual dimension; and Chen Chih-hsiung’s (陳次雄) “In Interfaces – Rhythms of Nature and Humanity,” highlights the variegated natural stage on which the human drama continues. "Kaidan Shu: Tales of Mist and Wind" by David Hochbaum- June 10th- July 11th @ Strychnin Gallery in Berlin

There is a voyeuristic quality to David Hochbaum's most recent body of
work, Kaidan Shu. His women seem haunted, lost in indecision, captured
at a moment between remembering where they have been and where they
must eventually go. They ask us "why" and are more than willing to
wait as long as it takes for us to answer.

This subtle, intimate and extremely personal collection of paintings,
sculpture and installation, over a year in the making, evokes the
austere, 14th century prints of the Japanese Muromachi period (think
bold, minimalist brush strokes) while retaining Hochbaum's signature,
multilayered textures. Hochbaum's use of multiple materials
(photographs, oils, acrylic washes, gold and silver leaf to name a
few) add an all too human character to these pieces, uniquely
describing the gauzy, unsure environments his characters inhabit. It
is a joy to spend the time needed to search his paintings for hidden
meanings and initially hard to notice detail.

After being introduced to many of Japan's enduring mythology via
books, film and good friends, David spent several weeks traveling
through and photographing numerous parts of Japan. This immersion in
Japan's culture and natural beauty inspired a desire to not only
depict many of the already existing obake banashi (literally translated
as "ghost stories") but to take things a step further and create
several new bakemono (ghosts) complete with their own mythologies and
personas.

Throughout the process, David relied upon and is immensely grateful to
friend and calligraphy writer Chie Martin. This collaboration enabled
David to maintain his use of text: Chie being able to translate his
snippets of prose and ensure that his paintings maintained an
authentic link to the Japanese style of printmaking.

Mindful of recent events, Strychnin Gallery at the request of the
artist will be donating a percentage of all sales to further
relief efforts in Japan.

MACRO–Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma – is showing the works of two young Italian artists, Beatrice Pediconi and Roberto De Paolis, who use photography to investigate the fragile, precarious nature of the figures and subjects they capture in their shots. These are presences that acquire a position in space only to the extent that they lose their forms in space itself.

The title suggests the delicate, volatile nature of the works by both Roman-born artists, even though they work quite independently, the sixteen large-format photographic prints of the No Trace project share a similar view of time and space, which is explored in relation to the fleeting presences and bodies that inhabit them. The two projects were already fully-formed, personal, and independent, but came to fruition through hindsight, completing and strengthening each other in a dialogue packed with questions and answers. The impalpable presences of Beatrice’s photography finds substance in Roberto’s characters. The latter appear to be prisoners of enchantment, but they are touched by the vitality of Beatrice’s vibrant figures. The works look at and question each other in a mirror-image play of references and echoes.
In No Trace, photography shows itself as an essential form of artistic expression if we are to fully understand contemporary forms of art. The Museum continues to show works by the youngest generation of artists in Rome, who offer their international training and experience, keeping alive the dialogue between the city and the world.
The principal element in Beatrice Pediconi’s research is water. Her instinctive “paintings” in water are captured at different moments by the camera’s instant eye, which grasps the unconscious transformation of matter. In the series on display at MACRO, the media used are highly refined India inks, which recall the microcosm of birth and its subsequent development. Wispy traces, ill-defined signs, and vague forms come apart in the light and shade, recalling the movement of life itself, in a fleeting, insubstantial world of illusion, precariousness, and constant change. All is uncertain and ambiguous in Pediconi’s works: the viewer is plunged into a never-ending flow of images that tell of time and of the world, of birth and motion, of flow and evolution.
The subjects of Roberto De Paolis’s photographs are suspended between reality and a dream-world dimension. Evanescent, ethereal figures take shape like apparitions in neutral settings or in private spaces, which only indirectly tell us of the stories and identities they reveal. In this carefully studied setting, which is more mental than physical, the individual is multiplied as though showing different but simultaneous moments of time, revealing the loss of a unifying identity and the fragmentation of the various parts of Self, which for an instant come together in the imaginary space of the photograph. Elena, Lucilla, Jasmine, and Dario, who give their names to De Paolis’s works, appear to brush against the surfaces of the images, leaving a precarious, transparent, mobile trace upon them.
De Paolis’s merging of different moments in time, which is obtained by long exposures that create a doubling of the figures, and the embryonal and emotional instability we see in Pediconi’s works, both reveal an attempt to go beyond the transient and the limits that the present and recollections of the past appear to impose on us, making us prisoners.
Beatrice Pediconi (Rome, 1972) lives and works in Rome and New York. She studied in Paris and Rome, where she graduated in Architecture in 1999. Her work spans various media, including photography, painting, and video. From 1996 to 2005 her research focused on architectural photography, but in 2003 she started painting on water, reproducing the image with photography and video. Her works have been shown in solo exhibitions at the Valentina Bonomo gallery in Bari and Rome, and at Photo & Contemporary in Turin. Her latest series, Untitled, is currently on show at the Italian Academy in New York. She has also taken part in a number of group exhibitions, including, in 2008, “Una Storia Privata. Fotografia e arte contemporanea nella collezione Cotroneo” at the Museo Carlo Bilotti in Rome and at PHotoEspaña. In 2009 came “La Fotografia Italiana” at Palazzo Sant’Elia in Palermo (curated by Achille Bonito Oliva). Since 2010 her works have been shown in group exhibitions in museums in the US, including “The Edge of Vision” curated by Lyle Rexer at the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Arizona, now on display at the Cornell Fine Art Museum, Winter Park, Florida. In 2008 she won the prize for Best Artist at the 7th Biennial of Experimental Art in St Petersburg. In 2009 she won the Lucid Art Foundation’s artist residency in San Francisco.
Roberto De Paolis (Rome, 1980) lives and works in Rome and New York. From 1999 to 2001 he studied Cinema at the London International Film School. In 2002 he returned to Rome, where he attended Beatrice Bracco’s drama school and started taking an interest in photography. In 2005 he started exhibiting his own photographs and took part in the 5th Festival Internazionale della Fotografia in Rome with an exhibition entitled “Psicoanalisti”. He embarked upon his true artistic career in 2007, when the City of Rome commissioned a large public installation, Light Building, from him, which he created on the façade of Palazzo Sora during the Notte Bianca, the night-long celebration of culture. His photographs were printed on plexiglass, mounted on the windows and back-lit, turning the building into a sort of vast light box in the centre of Rome. Since then Roberto De Paolis has made new installations for PhotoEspana in Madrid, Museo Bilotti in Rome (both for the Cotroneo “Una Storia Privata” Collection), Arte Fiera in Bologna, Casa Zerilli Marimò in New York, and for the Museo di San Servolo in Venice (curated by Raffaele Gavarro). In 2007 he started working with the Oredaria gallery in Rome, where in 2008 he put on his “Qui e mai altrove” solo exhibition. His installations and photographs have been shown in various group exhibitions abroad, including “Magie real” at ArtMbassy in Berlin and “Wildly Different Things: Dublin and New York” at The Observatory in Dublin. In 2009 he made the 15-minute BASSA MAREA, his first short film, which was shown at the Venice Film Festival in 2010. Since 2010 he has been working as a video artist with the British Louis Vuitton magazine, Nowness (www.nowness.com).

In celebration of the hundred-year anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China , the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in New York will present a photo exhibition by the noted Taiwanese photographer Shen Chao-Liang, entitled” Stage”
The exhibition, which opens on March 29 and will remain open until February of next year, is part of TECO’s program “Window on Taiwan: Arts and Culture,” an effort to raise awareness of Taiwanese cultural arts overseas. It consists of 20 works to be displayed on the first and second floors of the TECO offices. The exhibition aims to give international artists and art-lovers an opportunity to appreciate this outstanding work of contemporary Taiwanese photography, say representatives of the Taipei Cultural Center of TECO, which is responsible for the programming.

Shen will be present at the opening to discuss the inspiration for his work and his personal experiences. He has long been interested in Taiwanese folkways and the lives of the lower class, and these works focuses on the unique Taiwanese tradition of traveling “truck theaters.”

Since the 1970s, itinerant cabaret troupes have traveled throughout the Taiwanese countryside, setting up their hydraulic folding stage sets in village squares, in narrow alleyways, on country roads and fishing piers. A quick and convenient method for delivering local entertainment, these temporary stages can be seen all over Taiwan. Their decoration is also uniquely Taiwanese: troupes adorn their stages with bright and imaginative patterns, creating riotously-colored collages of symbols both local and global.

Shen uses special techniques to photograph these stages, giving them a novel look. Using large cameras and long exposures, he captures the beauty of rural Taiwanese skies and ocean views, and of the stages’ dazzling neon colors. Visitors can admire tangerine sunsets, chilling ocean blues, and views of the unique Taiwanese landscape. Shen’s knack for capturing changes in light lets him create fantastic, surreal atmospheres that convey a feeling of true locality.

Stage has been featured at the 2008 Deagu Photo Biennial in Korea; the 2009 GetXoPhoto Festival in Bilbao, Spain; and PHOTO TAIPEI 2009. In 2010 the exhibition toured Tokyo, Osaka and Taipei; it was awarded honorable mention in the 2010 Taipei Art Awards and won Shen invitations to the 2010 Dali International Photography Exhibition in China, the 2010 Taiwan Biennale, and the National Art Museum of China’s 2011 Cross-Strait Contemporary Art Exhibition.

Shen Chao-Liang was born in 1968 in Tainan, Taiwan. He obtained a master’s degree from the National Taiwan University of the Arts’ Graduate School of Applied Media Arts, then worked as a photojournalist, a vice-convener at the Liberty Times, and artist-in-residence at National Central University. Since 1993 he has dedicated himself to feature photography, producing numerous photo series including Reflections of Nan-Fang-Ao (2001), YULAN Magnolia Flower (2008), and Tsukiji Fish Market (2010).

Noted for his meticulous documentary style and his finely-made photo collections, Shen is widely recognized as a master of his field. His honors and awards include the Taiwanese Executive Yuan’s Golden Tripod Award for Best Photography (2000, 2002); the Asia Prize in the General Photography Festival at Photo City Sagamihara, Japan (2004); the Dong-gang Photography Award at the Dong-gang Photo Festival in Korea (2006); and Honorable Mention in the Taipei Art Awards (2010).

“Window on Taiwan: Arts and Culture” is a program sponsored both by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan) and Council for Cultural Affairs, Executive Yuan of the Republic of China (Taiwan) designed to utilize the public spaces of Taiwan’s embassies and representative offices as a cultural window, providing a glimpse into the vitality and originality of Taiwanese arts and culture. The plan is carried out in New York by TECO and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

Pretty as a Picture

We are pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by KEN SHUNG: titled Pretty as a Picture.

The exhibition will feature a collection of large and medium scale prints of his recent Portrait / Landscapes work in his first New York debut showing.

The new work will be shown at the Tompkins Square New York Public Library Gallery beginning March 9 through March 31, 2011. There will be a reception on Wednesday March 9 from 4:30-6:30 pm.

Ken Shung began his career spotting prints in the studio of Irving Penn and freelancing in the studios of editorial photographers Annie Liebovitz, Bill King, Bob Richardson, and assorted magazine photographers. Trained in the workings of studio lighting and editorial magazine photography, Mr. Shung set out to find his own style without the limits of the formal studio to produce work with the intention and idea that "The World is my Studio."

Mr. Shung has worked for countless magazines shooting portrait assignments, alongside commercial lingerie campaigns starting with magazines like "7 days " to New York Magazine, New York Times Magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, Vanity Fair, and a host of Time Inc. and Hearst Publications.

This showcase is a collection of images made during assignments and personal travels, showing a new direction and change from his formal portrait work, instead incorporating decisive moments and storytelling in the landscape /portraits genre.

Ken Shung sets out to make monumental images that embody the idea of the Pretty Picture. He captures disjunction, viewing our social spaces with wonder and tenderness and a magical decisive moment. In a typical Shung image, something ominous, apocalyptic, paradoxical, pictorial, and timeless has happened.

Ken Shung states, "It is said that a photographer/ artist is always searching to find his or her own vision and voice, otherwise they just ends up making a bunch of Pretty Pictures. With this collection of recent images I explore the nature of 'When is a photograph just a Pretty Picture?’"

Mr. Shung considers his landscapes and portraits graphic, simple, psychological, introverted, and uncomfortably romantic, as well as very challenging conception-wise and academically well-conceived. Unsolved emotions and bold slices of life are part of the pleasures and smiles that are felt when you look at the "Pretty Pictures.

Written on a Wave: Beatrice Pediconi’s Art

It is written that Kobodaishi, the holiest of Buddhist priests, a wizard among scribes, wrote with his brush upon the surface of a stream a poem in praise of the ephemeral qualities of water. The characters remained intact for a moment, like autumn leaves falling from the trees, before dissolving in the rushing current.
There was at first something of this in photography, how light was harnessed to write upon the surface of the world -- but limited to a piece of paper, metal or glass. The images of photography are static, but seem always to want to be something else, something yet more intimate with the changing appearance of things, hovering between an object and story, a document capable of comprehending, not rending, time. What a shock, this fall into time, into the perpetual pastness of the photograph.
For Beatrice Pediconi, the condition of photography is the subject of photography, investigated as a means, finally, of transcending its limitations. She is the medium’s Kobodaishi, who has dispensed with the camera and returned to the primary registration of light in order to record conditions and phenomena (the interaction of light, water and ink) as they occur. This exploration at the margin between states, disciplines and technologies marks her as contemporary, and marks as well the expansion of photography beyond the borders of the single fixed image. Pediconi’s images move; her art exists as both the frozen pattern of a photograph and the changing pattern of a video. The paradoxical aspect of this abstract work is that although the video is itself contained within a frame, we can imagine the surface extending like a diaphanous scroll, and the patterns simply developing continuously throughout time.
The closest relation to the transparency and mobility of Pediconi’s work, which unites drawing and photography again after at least a century of division, is Roland Flexner’s recent investigation of suminagashi. The Korean-Japanese technique employs the breath to blow ink across a water or oil surface in order to create patterns for “marbled” endpapers of a book. These patterns are directly blotted with carefully chosen paper to produce remarkably intricate and detailed abstractions. Like Pediconi’s photographs, the suminagashi works hover near the edge of photography, with their rich and complex tonalities. A very different artist, the English photographer Susan Derges, touches on the capability of the photogram to record the events of the world without mediation. Her large photogram works capture the motions of the rivers and tides flowing over her photographic paper.
Pediconi finds herself in ethereal and deeply contemplative company. Her work is meant, I think to evoke states, not to merely to provide an image of them, that is, to represent. It certainly refuses the traditional transactions of meaning in which the artist is presumed to have the upper hand. These are works in which chance plays so great a role that the viewer is at least on equal footing with the artist. It is as if the work came directly from nature itself (as it has, in a sense). So the reference to the Buddhist master Kobodaishi is not adventitious. It suggests the frame of mind with which we should approach these works. Allow yourself to see as if you were passing away as swiftly as the patterns that form on a wave. Allow yourself to see as if you never moved. Allow yourself to be temporary and timeless. As you are.

Spacer and Villa Pacri are pleased to announce SPACER:TWO, UPSTATE MEMORY, a group exhibition of works by 19 photographers.

Inspired by the picturesque upstate New York countryside, the exhibition will feature 29 photographs accompanied by the screening of ‘I Love NY/NY,’ a video remix of commercials from the 80s.

SPACER:TWO, UPSTATE MEMORY is a one-night only event. It will be held on January 24, 2011 at the Villa Pacri, a new, cozy, sophisticated and ultra-chic destination in the heart of the Meat Packing District.

Some photographs will be available for purchase on-site and on spacerspacer.com.

Paige De Ponte, an award winning photographer, filmmaker, writer, producer and publisher.
A young woman adventurer, at 29, a single mother of two she packed herself and family off to Italy to pursue her dream of photography and accomplished much more.

De Ponte modeled periodically, but found she was more interested in the other side of the camera. She began working as a photographer in earnest in 1990. She worked in Paris at Elle Studios alongside such greats as photographer Jean Louis Sieff and Patrick Demarchelier who mentored and inspired her to shoot in black-and-white, opening up a whole new level for her work.

In 1996, De Ponte took the next step and moved to New York to continue her career in commercial and high fashion editorial. De Ponte traveled between Maui, NY and Europe for many years, has been published in over 200 fashion editorials and campaigns over the years.

In 1998 she left an established Fashion career shooting for European clients such as Harper's Bazaar Italy & Versace to fulfill a deeper dream. Utilizing her talents to a higher purpose through the following endeavors.

Founding the non-profit organization, G.A.I.A., utilizing her talents to preserve and aid the fight to protect the environment, and cultural diversity. Trekking harsh terrain's elements and even authorities to bring about greater awareness of our earth's disappearing beauty in the G.A.I.A. photography books - "GAIA I Journey Into Vanishing Worlds" and "GAIA II Song of the Vanishing Tribes".

De Ponte founded GLOBAL ART IN ACTION, in the hope of inspiring awareness and change regarding critical issues facing our world today

Since 1990, De Ponte continues to exhibit works from her travels in New York and Hawaii. Her photographs which depict over 80 areas and tribes in 30 countries around the world are astonishing. She also exhibits her collections of Nudes and soon a multi media exhibition in 2009 of wall size nudes and acrylics.
